STEVE DOHERTY

Born and raised in Vancouver, BC Canada; Steve grew up competing in numerous sports including hockey, soccer, golf and skiing. He graduated from Vancouver College High School (’93) lettering in football and basketball. Doherty played baseball at the University of Washington, Los Angeles City College, and spent summers competing in the prestigious Cape Cod & Alaska Collegiate Summer Leagues before heading to play at Long Beach StateThroughout his baseball journey, Steve had the privilege of being coached by a distinguished lineup of mentors. Among them were John Haar, an esteemed figure in Canadian baseball who was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. Additionally, Steve benefited from the guidance of Ken Knutson and Joe Ross during his time at the University of Washington, and he honed his skills under the tutelage of Steve Rousey and Mike Kirby at Los Angeles City College. Finally, he had the opportunity to learn from the expertise of Dave Snow and Mike Weathers while playing at Long Beach State. These influential coaches undoubtedly played a crucial role in Steve’s development as a player, coach, and scout. Doherty concluded his collegiate baseball career with the Dirtbags by capturing the Big West Conference title in 1997 and earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications (’99) with a minor in Physical Education. Continuing his education, Steve earned his Teaching Credential in Physical Education from National University and Scouting/Analytics Certification from Sports Management Worldwide.

Doherty was selected as a shortstop by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1996 MLB Amateur Draft out of Los Angeles City College where he hit .427, 10HR & 72 RBI garnering JUCO All-American and South Coast Conference Co-MVP honors. The following year Steve was drafted as a second baseman by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1997 MLB Amateur Draft out of Long Beach State. Steve signed with then Diamondbacks scout Steve Springer, current Oakland A’s pro scout. Doherty toiled in the minor leagues for a brief period hitting .287, 5HR, 29 RBI & 53 hits in 53 games played. In 2001 Steve came back to baseball and played for MLB legend Steve Yeager on the Independent Western League Long Beach Breakers, where they captured the league title in their inaugural 2001 season. 

Steve embarked on his coaching career at Long Beach Wilson HS & Redondo Union HS in Southern California where he remained as a teacher and coach for 10 years before transitioning into scouting.  He brings experience in player assessment, procurement & development.

Currently Steve serves as a National Scouting Coordinator for PERFECT GAME USA.

Steve and his wife Deidra have been married for 24 years, live in Long Beach, Ca and have two daughters; Reese and Avery.
